This guidance has been subject to extensive consultation with ALGE members during 2000 and 2001. It has also been prepared after considerable discussion with:

• The Wildlife Trusts
• The English and Welsh Local Biodiversity Issues Groups
• The Wildlife and Countryside Division of the Department of the Environment, Food and Regional Affairs (DEFRA formerly DETR).

It represents ALGE's professional view on where local government is at present on the delivery of biodiversity and provides pointers as to where improvement can be sought in the future.

It will also hopefully be useful in guiding local authorities when they examine what action they should take to deliver Biodiversity Action through their Community Strategies (as required in England by Section 48 of Circular 04/01).
